Fish, snails, and other tank mates for freshwater shrimp

A conservative guide to mixing shrimp with fish and snails, and why shrimplets change the answer.

Most compatibility arguments ignore shrimplets. Adults may seem fine while every new baby disappears. That is why the safest compatibility advice always asks what success means to you: surviving adults, or a breeding colony.

Conservative rules

  • Species-only tanks are safest for breeding colonies.
  • Snails are often easier companions than fish.
  • Even “nano” fish may still hunt shrimplets.
  • Moulting adults are temporarily more vulnerable than usual.
